Can You Epoxy a Garage Floor During a Calgary Winter?
· 2 min read

Yes, but only if the concrete itself is warm enough. That's the part most people miss.
The slab temperature is what matters
In winter, a garage slab is almost always colder than the air above it. Standard epoxy generally shouldn't go down on a slab below about 13°C (55°F). Most standard epoxies won't fully cure below about 10°C (50°F), and a coating that stops curing can stay soft and fail later.
Cold also slows everything down. A common rule of thumb: for every drop of about 10°C below room temperature, cure time roughly doubles.
What that means for your garage
- Heated, insulated garage: we can install year-round, as long as the heat stays on through the cure.
- Unheated garage: we either use a cold-tolerant system like polyaspartic, which cures at much lower temperatures, or schedule your floor for spring.
- Watch for condensation. A cold slab can "sweat." Coating over moisture leads to cloudy patches and peeling.
How long before you can use it?
In winter, expect longer waits: often around 3 days before walking on it and about a week before parking on it. Full hardness and chemical resistance can take up to 30 days.
Built for Calgary roads
Winter brings road salt and de-icers into your garage. A proper multi-coat system with a durable topcoat holds up far better than a big-box DIY kit.
