Epoxy, Polyaspartic or Flake? Choosing a Garage Floor Coating
· 2 min read

"Epoxy floor" is often used for any coated concrete floor, but there are a few different systems. Here's how they compare.
Epoxy
A thick, durable coating that bonds well to properly prepared concrete. It's often used as the base coat in a multi-layer system. Standard epoxy needs warm conditions to cure and can yellow in strong sunlight without a protective topcoat.
Polyaspartic
A fast-curing coating that holds its colour in UV light. It's often used as a topcoat over epoxy, or as a full system. It cures quickly and handles cooler temperatures better than standard epoxy, which helps with Calgary's short seasons.
Flake
Flake isn't a separate resin. It's decorative vinyl chips broadcast into the base coat and sealed under a clear topcoat. It adds texture and grip, hides dust and small imperfections, and is one of the most popular choices for garages.
Metallic
Metallic pigments create a swirled, marble-like finish. It's a showpiece look for basements, home gyms, bars and commercial spaces.
What we usually recommend
For most Calgary garages, a multi-layer system with an epoxy base, flake, and a polyaspartic topcoat gives the best mix of durability, grip and resistance to road salt. The most important step is surface preparation. Even the best coating will fail on poorly prepared concrete.
